FOUR DISTINCT BASELINES

SEPARATE
FACTIONS.

Different bodies. Different origins.
Conflict does not make them one organism.

Humans, Gaia, Corruption and Caretakers are separate factions. Their ordinary forms have distinct anatomy, materials and organisation. Corruption's spread on Earth starts at the crashed city-sized mothership. The Lazarus orbital satellite is the player's separate point of origin.

Humans / BASELINE

Materials & anatomy
Human skin, clothing, fabric, familiar steel, concrete and Human-built equipment.
Independent origin
Earth Humanity. The player arrives from a separate Project Lazarus orbital satellite.
Keep the distinction
Rival enclaves are still Human. Captured alien equipment or an altered individual does not redefine the faction's ordinary bodies.

CORRUPTION / SOURCE ON EARTH

It spreads
from the mothership.

Corruption was carried as a prisoner. Its Earth incursion expands outward from breached containment in the crashed city-sized mothership. This identifies the source of the invasion on Earth; its primordial history remains separate.

Explore exceptional altered states (speculative)

Earlier conversion ideas remain possible local cases: an infested host, captured machine or reconstructed body. They do not define a faction's normal appearance, create a shared origin or prove changed allegiance.

A contested
condition.

Choose the faction causing a proposed alteration. These twelve scenarios are exceptional pressures, not a default state of all four factions.

Choose the source of a proposed exceptional change

Baseline Humans have recognisable Human bodies, fabric clothing, conventional equipment and built settlements. They fight every other faction and rival enclaves. The following cases are exceptional coercive appropriations, not a normal hybrid Human identity.

Humans → Gaia

An organism taken alive

An exceptional Human group may constrain or selectively alter one Earth organism for a task. Human equipment and the organic body remain visibly separate. Taking that specimen does not amount to taking Gaia, Earth's living world.

Contested control
Restraint, training or a changed function in one organism does not place the surrounding living world under Human control or establish the captive's allegiance.
Encounter pressure
The captors must defend their intervention while Gaia's living responses continue to make their position unstable. The specimen provides no answer about Gaia's awareness.

Humans → Corruption

A constrained sample

An exceptional Human experiment captures a fragment from the mothership-sourced flesh incursion and attempts to constrain one output in separate equipment. Ordinary Humans and their tools remain uninfested baseline bodies and materials.

Contested control
One tested function does not tame Corruption, make it standard Human technology or prove that its spread has stopped.
Encounter pressure
A captured sample can open a new local infestation and threaten the group that tried to use it.

Humans → Caretakers

A captured controller

After a raid, an exceptional Human group may replace an accessible controller in one seized manufactured Caretaker frame. Human operators and alien machinery retain distinct forms and histories.

Contested control
Retasking a function can coexist with a resisting Machine core. Capture, repair and allegiance are different facts.
Encounter pressure
Using the frame creates a contested asset that Caretakers may recover or destroy; it does not redefine every Human as a cyborg.

Gaia is Earth's living world, evolving and responding to the threat through its organic life and the conditions that sustain it. Its scope is the living whole of Earth. Its awareness remains mysterious. Its baseline stays separate from manufactured Caretakers and alien Corruption flesh; an exceptional local contact cannot explain the whole.

Gaia → Humans

A living pressure within the settlement

An exceptional Earth-derived organism or living growth may occupy a Human shelter or create a persistent bodily dependency. This local hostile encounter is a proposed interaction within Gaia's living world, distinct from Corruption spreading from the mothership.

Contested control
Illness, entanglement and a changed dependency require separate evidence. An observed response does not establish a planetary command or settle whether Gaia is aware.
Encounter pressure
Human attempts to hold their settlement can conflict with the living world's continuing changes. Control of one organism does not give control of Gaia, and another Human enclave may exploit the disruption.

Gaia → Corruption

Two life forms at an edge

An exceptional Earth-derived colony persists on exposed alien tissue as Gaia's living responses confront the advancing Corruption front. Organic Earth life and vascular alien flesh remain separate at the contact.

Contested control
Feeding or damage is not itself conversion. Persistent repurposing of one alien living structure remains a further speculative outcome, without explaining Gaia's awareness.
Encounter pressure
Pushing back one flesh front can change conditions elsewhere and make a Human or Caretaker position harder to hold. No response guarantees help to another faction.

Gaia → Caretakers

An occupied structure

An exceptional Earth-derived growth enters a damaged manufactured housing and persists around its mechanisms. This is one possible contact with Gaia's living world; organic tissue and fabricated Caretaker components retain separate identities.

Contested control
A jam is damage. Sustained repurposing or a new living dependency is a stronger exceptional change. Neither establishes Gaia's awareness, automatic allegiance or mechanical anatomy as a baseline Earth trait.
Encounter pressure
Caretaker clearance can restore hostile machinery while damaging living systems around it. Human intervention can deepen that conflict instead of securing a safe route.

Baseline Corruption is distinctive alien vascular flesh and membrane growth. Its Earth incursion starts at the crashed city-sized prison mothership. Assimilated hosts are altered victims of that spread, not evidence that all factions normally share its anatomy.

Corruption → Humans

An assimilated Human host

At an infestation beyond the mothership source, Corruption invades one recognisable Human body. The altered host must be labelled separately from ordinary Human defenders and native Corruption forms.

Contested control
Remaining Human action, invading flesh control and allegiance can conflict. A familiar voice or mixed outline proves neither safety nor total takeover.
Encounter pressure
Defenders must respond to the immediate threat without assuming that every unaltered person already shares the alien biomass.

Corruption → Gaia

An assimilated Earth host

Corruption takes an Earth organism or living structure and covers or replaces it with distinctive vascular alien flesh. That exceptional altered host remains separate from Gaia's ordinary organic evolution.

Contested control
Native ancestry may remain visible while control is contested. Organic native protection and alien assimilation must be distinguished materially and behaviourally.
Encounter pressure
Gaia continues responding to the alien intrusion while Humans and Caretakers pursue their own hostile aims against both. The fate of one host settles neither the wider conflict nor Gaia's awareness.

Corruption → Caretakers

An infested manufactured frame

Corruption breaches one Caretaker interface and grows over a clearly fabricated chassis. Only this exceptional host carries alien tissue; surrounding baseline Machines remain entirely manufactured.

Contested control
Physical intrusion can contest an actuator or sensor without magical software possession, a shared organic origin or automatic allegiance.
Encounter pressure
A frame built to contain the incursion can become a local route of spread while its original core resists.

Baseline Caretakers are manufactured geometric metal-and-ceramic Machines. They attack through mechanical systems and independent hostile aims. A fleshy or animal-derived captive in a conversion study remains separate from the ordinary Machine body.

Caretakers → Humans

An imposed interface

In an exceptional coercive reconstruction, Caretakers restrain a separate Human captive and fit manufactured braces or physical neural interfaces. The tools, captor and captive remain distinct.

Contested control
Restraint and tested control of one function are not total bodily ownership or chosen allegiance. Ordinary Human anatomy is unchanged elsewhere.
Encounter pressure
Breaking one imposed connection can stop a task while leaving other restraints and enemies active.

Caretakers → Gaia

An instrumented captive

An exceptional Caretaker experiment attaches fabricated equipment to a captured Earth organism. The specimen remains distinct from the manufactured captor and from Gaia as the wider living world.

Contested control
Clearance, capture and reconstruction are different acts. Fitted metal does not turn Gaia into a Machine faction or establish the specimen's allegiance. One imposed function cannot settle Gaia's awareness.
Encounter pressure
The experiment can damage or destabilise living systems beyond the restraint, leaving the Caretakers and Humans exposed to further hostile changes without revealing whether Gaia is aware.

Caretakers → Corruption

A reconstructed captive organ

An exceptional Caretaker installation isolates alien flesh from the mothership-sourced incursion and attempts to redirect a function through visible manufactured supports. The captive tissue is not normal Machine anatomy.

Contested control
Containment restrains spread; reconstruction attempts to change a function. Neither proves a tame organism, shared faction identity or universal control over distant growth.
Encounter pressure
The installation must fight the same incursion it is trying to exploit, and one breached interface can create another local assault.

IDENTITY IS NOT A MATERIAL SWAP

Origin. Body.
Control. Allegiance.

Keep all four facts separate. A normal Caretaker is manufactured; an infested Caretaker is an exceptional case. Gaia is Earth’s living world, with awareness left mysterious; an assimilated Earth organism is a Corruption-altered host. Neither case makes the baseline factions the same.
